About the Route
Clare Island Fast Ferries run a direct service from Achill Island to Clare Island throughout July and August, sailing every Tuesday and Friday. This is your chance to experience two of Mayo’s most beautiful islands in one trip.
The ferry departs Kildownet Pier and arrives at Clare Island’s harbour. From there, the island is yours — beaches, hiking trails, history, and the Atlantic views that make Clare Island one of the most talked-about day trips in Ireland.
What to Do on Clare Island

Dogs are welcome on the ferry and on the island. There is a €5 charge per bike and €10 for e-bikes to bring on board.
Clare Island is made for child-friendly family days out. You can spend some time building sandcastles at the beach, playing on playgrounds or grabbing ice cream at the pier.

Getting to Kildownet Pier, Achill
Kildownet Pier is located on the south side of Achill Island, just off the R319. Free parking is available at the pier.
If you’re travelling from Westport, take the N59 to Mulranny and continue onto Achill Island via the bridge. Kildownet Pier is approximately 8km from the bridge — follow signs for Kildownet.
The ferry departs at 9.15am. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before departure. The return ferry leaves Clare Island at 3.15pm, giving you a full day on the island before heading back.
